Where are you reading?

Spring Break is almost here! ML and UL students can enter our annual photo contest.

Here are the details for ML students.

The prizes will be awarded in the following categories: 

1. Most exotic (for photos taken outside of the Atlanta area) 

2. Most creative (for photos taken inside the Atlanta area) 

3. Most interesting people reading in your photo (for photos taken anywhere) 

4,5. Wild cards (chosen by the library staff)

Rules: 

• In the photo you must be reading a book, magazine, or newspaper (can be on an eReader)
• You may submit actual photographs, print-outs of digital photos, or JPEG files (we will print them in color) 
• Photos must be REAL (no digital alterations) 
• Photos must be turned in to the library by Friday, March 18, 2016 to be considered for prizes 
• You may enter no more than three photos 
• Bring them in person or e-mail them to mkochel@gallowayschool.org

UL students  can win ENTIRE BOXES OF DOUGHNUTS (!!!) and have slightly different rules.

3. Coolest person/people in your photo (not counting yourself) 

4. Best PHOTOSHOPPED picture  

5. Wild card (chosen by the library interns)

Rules: 

• In the photo you must be reading a book, magazine, or newspaper (can be on an eReader)
• Photos must be REAL (no digital alterations) except for the “Best Photoshopped Picture”
• Photos must be received by Friday, March 18, 2016 to be considered for prizes 
• You may enter no more than three photos

All Night Read In

The 6th annual ML All Night Read In will be held on March 18-19. Galloway students in 6th-8th grades are invited to spend the night in the library doing a lot of reading plus many other fun activities. If you love to read, we guarantee you will have a good time. Registration begins on Friday, Feb. 26 at 8:45 in the ML commons and continues in the library until we are full. See Ms. Kochel if you need any further information. Upper Learning Students,

Here's your chance to win a brand new Kindle Fire just for reading a book during winter break! Here's all you need to do.

GET COZY Read a book! Find one at the library, check out a library Kindle, or get one from anywhere you like. Take a look at all of the great choices in the Galloway Library or try out our OverDrive ebooks. 

GET POSEY Take a selfie of you and the book and caption it. Post it to Twitter with the hashtag #readlax OR just email it to Ms. Kochel

GET CHOSEY The most creative photo/caption (as selected by a team of UL students) will earn the creator a new Kindle Fire. Yay!

The bottom line...we know you are busy and don't have a lot of time to read for fun, so we hope you will take time during this break to relax and read something for your own enjoyment.

Reading Survey Results

The results from the Middle Learning Reading Survey are in! You can see them in this infographic that was made with Piktochart. The good news is that 75% of students said reading is important. The surprising news is that the majority of students would rather read a paper book than an eBook. And it's no surprise at all that the number one reason students don't read more is "too much homework." Thank you to ML students Emily, Mary, Simone, and Libby for your hard work on this project.

Georgia Peach Book Award for Teen Readers

The nominees for next year's Georgia Peach Book Award have now been announced. The committee met yesterday and released the titles. It was my third and final year serving on this committee, and as always, it was a great day of talking about books. Galloway has almost all of these in the library now, so feel free to come and get them. Take a closer look on our library Pinterest board.

You have devices, we have eBooks!

We are thrilled to announce our new collection of eBooks and audiobooks. Galloway students may now borrow free downloadable audiobooks and e-books for an e-reader, mobile device, or computer with our OverDrive library. Use our website or download the OverDrive mobile app from any app store. We are part of a consortium of independent scools (MISBO) and this collection includes over 1,000 titles. Add The Galloway School as your library, and while you're at it, add your public library's OverDrive collection too!

You may choose to create your own OverDrive account and an Adobe ePub account. However, you may bypass these options and still use the system by signing in with your Galloway network ID. We understand that there may be some confusion with the initial setup. If you have questions, please contact Middle/Upper Learning librarian Marcia Kochel.  Early Learning students do not have network IDs and should contact librarian Amy Zupancic for login instructions.

This year the Galloway Library sponsored our 4th annual Spring Break Photo Contest for Middle Learning students. We included Upper Learning students in the contest for the first time, and some teachers participated as well. We had 91 photos entered—and you can see them all in our Photo Gallery. Winners and honorable mentions are noted in the slideshow. Thanks to everyone who entered—you made it very difficult to choose the winners.

All Night Read-In

There will be lots of reading and lots of book-related fun. It is guaranteed to be a great night.

Listen to a Book

The Galloway Library has a collection of digital audiobooks that can be played on computers or any device that takes apps. The app to download is called Catalist Digital or use your computer and go to http://catalistdigital.com. Your login for this site is the same as the Galloway database login. If you don't know what it is, ask the library staff. Once you log in you can see all the books in our audiobook collection. It's a great way to read books in the car, while you are exercising, or even on the beach on spring break.

Taylor Swift Webcast

Students from 5th-8th graders gathered last Friday to watch a Scholastic webcast from Taylor Swift. She talked about reading and how storytelling is an important part of her songwriting process. See the webcast here.

The Galloway Library is hosting the 2nd annual All Night Read In for middle learning students in 6th-8th grades. It is guaranteed to be a fun night of reading, movies, games and more. Happy Book Bling Day!

The beads were flying today in Middle Learning in celebration of Book Bling Day. It's hard to explain but it's fun! Tomorrow we are hosting Poetry Alive and having DEAR time at the end of the day to celebrate Read Across America and to get us ready for spring break. ML students—don't forget to take your picture reading during spring break. Turn your photos in to the library the week after break and you could win a prize!
